Castlegar Students Last Days in Embetsuキャスルガー生徒たち遠別町の最後日々

The last days were so busy for everyone involved. キャスルガー生徒の最後の日々は誰でもにとって非常に忙しかったです。

First off, the students had their own free days where they toured around with their host families.最初は、ホストファミリーとのフリー日があって、その時留萌管内などに見物していきました。

In the evening we all came together and had a BBQ as well set off fireworks. その夕方に皆が集めて、バーベキューをして、日本の花火に体験をしました。

We even got fresh scallops caught that morning! They were amazingly fresh and delicious. 今朝で捕まったものすごく新鮮なホタテをもらって、とても美味しかったです。

The next day the students got to play park golf, but due to the weather, they had to play in the indoor arena called Spark.次の日は朝にパークゴルフの体験が始まったけど、前の日雨が降ってしまったため、スパークの方で行いました。

After park golf, we all headed to the park to try slack lining, as well as catch frogs in the ponds and then the students played tag and threw a Frisbee with each other. パークゴルフの後は富士見ヶ丘公園でスラックラインをしたり、池にカエルを捕まったり、鬼五個などの遊びをしました。

Then we had a lovely lunch in the park prepared by a new restaurant in Embetsu called Komedokoro. そして、遠別のけっこう新しいレストランの「コメドコロ」が素晴らしい昼ご飯を用意してくれました。

After that the students planted a tree to commemorate this year’s exchange. 昼ご飯や遊びが終わって、今年のキャスルガー市青少年訪問団記念植樹を植えました。

Once that was finished, they headed to community center and they experienced a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.その後はマナピィ21で茶道の体験をしました。

Finally, after the tea ceremony, the students got a rest before the farewell reception.茶道の終わりは最後のレセプションをする前にちょと休んでいました。

The reception had many speeches, a taiko (Japanese style of drumming) performance, a gift exchange between the two cities, as well as some events prepared by both the Canadian students as well as the Embetsu students.レセプションでは、スピーチが多くて、太鼓のパフォーマンスがあって、姉妹都市のプレセント交流もあって、キャスルガーと遠別の子どもたちを準備したアトラクションがありました。

The Canadian students sang the national anthem “O, Canada” as well as “My favorite things” from The Sound of Music followed by a piano performance.キャスルガーの生徒はカナダの国歌「オ、カナダ」とサウンド・オブ・ミュジックの「私のお気に入り」という歌を歌ってくれて、ピアノを弾いてくれました。

The Embetsu students prepared a traditional card game called Karuta and tested the students ability to read Japanese characters. They impressed a lot of Japanese people by how well they did.遠別の生徒たちは簡単なカルタゲームを用意して、キャスルガー生徒のひらがなを読める能力に驚いた人々が多かったです。

Once that was over, the students moved onto teach everyone the Macarena. It was a huge hit with the Embetsu students wanting to teach it to their friends at school.そして、最後に、キャスルガー生徒がレセプションに来てくれたの皆さんに「マカレナ」という踊りを教えてくれました。遠別の生徒たちは結構気に入れて、友達に教えたい人もいました。

After the reception it was time for their last night in Embetsu.レセプションの後は遠別の最後の一泊でした。

All the students got up for the 7am departure. So everyone looks pretty exhausted! 皆さんが朝早くの七時の出発に来ました。皆がちょっと眠そうですね。

There were many tears when we had to say goodbye, but we all hope the Castlegar students enjoy the rest of their time in Japan. お別れが悲しい何ですが、遠別の方はキャスルガー生徒たちが遠別以外の旅を楽しむように祈っています。

 

Embetsu Shrine Festival and Asahikawa!遠別神社祭りと旭川！

The day after school, the Castlegar students spent the day with their host families and saw Embetsu’s shrine festival. 中学生生活体験の次の日は遠別神社祭りなので、キャスルガーの生徒たちがホストファミリーと一緒に遠別神社祭りを見ました。

Some students even got to participate in holding a mikoshi (a miniature shrine) and walked all over the town of Embetsu.お神輿に参加してくれた生徒もいましたので、遠別の町内を歩いていました。

They also got yukata  from their host families, which they showed off at festival. ホストファミリーとから浴衣をもらいまして、祭りでその伝統的な姿を見せてくれました。

After that they spent their first night with their host family, and had to wake up early to head to the city of Asahikawa. その後はホストファミリーの家で初めてのお泊まりをして、そして、次の日は朝早く旭川へ向かってバスを乗りました。

We all took a bus for the 3 hour drive to see Asahikawa’s Asahiyama Zoo.私達は三時間ぐらいに旭川の旭山動物園へ着きました。

After the zoo, we went to the Aeon Mall near the station, where all the students went shopping and played games and used photo booths with their host buddies. 動物園の後は駅の隣にあるイオンモールで遠別の生徒たちと買い物をしたりゲームセンターでゲームやプリクラをしました。

We even played bingo on the bus in English and Japanese!バスで日本語と英語でビンゴもしました！

I hope they all rested well after the long day, as the next day is their first free day with their host families. その後からよく休んで、明日のホストファミリーとのフリー日を楽しんでください。お疲れ様です。

Back to School!学校に戻りましたね

Today the Castlegar students got to experience life as a Japanese junior high school student.今日キャスルガーの生徒たちは日本の中学生生活を体験してもらいました。

They had a welcoming ceremony in the morning where they played musical chairs.中学校では歓迎会で在校生の皆さんとイス取りゲームをしました。

After that they had a full schedule of classes in math, English, Japanese, science, music, social studies, and P.E. そのあと、いっぱいの時間割で数学や英語や日本語や理科や音楽や社会や体育の授業もしました。

All the teachers at Embetsu junior high school made special and fun lessons and used as much English as they could to help the Castlegar students participate.遠別中学校の先生方は特別の楽しくてキャスルガーの生徒たちが参加するような授業を考えてくれて、更に出来る限りの英語を使ってくれました。大変お疲れ様でした！

They also ate school lunch, which was cold udon, with fried sweet potato and squid, along with some inari-sushi. It looked so good, I actually forgot to take a picture!それに皆さんと一緒に給食を食べました。今日の給食は冷たいうどん、甘芋とイカの天ぷら、稲荷寿司でした。実は美味しくてついに写真を撮るのを忘れてしまいました。

I think all the Castlegar students enjoyed their time at the junior high school.キャスルガーの生徒たちが初めての日本の中学生生活の経験を楽しんでいたと思います。

After classes, it was the first day of the Embetsu Shrine Festival, and all the students got to enjoy the different food and stands, as well as hang out with their new friends from school!!授業が終わったら、遠別神社祭りに行きました。祭りでいろいろな食べ物を試してみていて、新しい友達と遊ぶことも出来たので、とても楽しい日になりました。

 

 

 

 

 

Welcome To Embetsu!遠別町へようこそ！

Today, after waiting a year, the Embetsu students and Castlegar students are finally reunited.今日、一年間でずっと待っていた遠別町の中学生はやっともう一回キャスルガー町の友達と会いました。

We have been waiting a long time, and all the students seemed excited to finally see each other again. 私達も長い間にを楽しみにしていて、お互いの生徒さんたちは非常に嬉しそうに見ました・

We are glad to have the Castlegar students got to Embetsu safe and sound, although a bit tired from the bus ride up from Sapporo.キャスルガーの生徒さんたちは無事に遠別町まで来てくれてよかっただと思いながら、きっと札幌からのバスに疲れているのでしょうよね。

First-off, the students had a Welcome Reception at the town hall, where they were met by the town mascot Momo-chin (a pink and green-haired flying squirrel). とにかく、最初の予定は遠別町の役場で歓迎会が行う事です。遠別町のももちんも玄関でお迎えに来てくれました！

During the Ceremony the Castlegar students spent time listening to speeches, as well as having their own student representative give a speech. They even got Momo-chin pins from the city!歓迎会をしながら、静かにスピーチを聴いて、キャスルガーの生徒代表もスピーチをしてくれました。それより、町からのももちんの記章をゲットしました！

Finally, after all the speeches, they got to have dinner with their new host families for the first time. スピーチが終わってから、ホストファミリーと一緒に初めての夕食を食べました。

From everyone in Embetsu, we welcome the Castlegar students and hope they enjoy their time here, and especially our Shrine Festival!!. 遠別町の方から、キャスルガーの生徒たちが遠別町を楽しんでくれるように祈っています、特に遠別神社祭りですね！

Golden Week Trip ゴールデンウイークの旅

Hello everyone. I hope everyone had a nice Golden Week. I heard that Sakura blossoms finally came to Embetsu. However, I did not get to see them. I spent all of Golden Week in Tokyo with my friends. Some from Hokkaido, and some from University and High School.

皆さん、こんにちは。皆さんも楽しいゴールデンウイークを過ごしたことと思います。桜がやっと遠別まで来たそうです。しかし、私が見える機会はなかったです。ゴールデンウイークではずっと友達と東京にいました。北海道の友達も大学と高校の同級生にも会いました。

I stayed in Asakusa, and could see the Tokyo Sky Tree from the Hostel I stayed at, it was a great view! Asakusa is a beautiful area, and I liked going to see the Kaminarimon and Senso-ji Temple. I even got a fortune, but it was just medium luck so I was a little disappointed. My friends and I often spent a few nights at the Izakaya‘s in the area and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Although, it was extremely crowded in the day time.

浅草に泊まって、ホステルから東京のスカイツリーを見えて、とてもいい景色でした。浅草はとてもきれいな地域で、雷門と浅草寺を見るのは楽しかったです。私もおみくじを引いて、だだの吉だったので少しがっかりしまた。夜に友達とよく浅草の居酒屋に行って、その雰囲気を楽しみました。でも、昼の浅草は混み過ぎで、ちょっと大変でした。

I also went to Roppongi and checked out the art museum. I even got to see the big spider. I was so excited that there was a Star Wars exhibit going on. It was very cool seeing the unique interpretation of people of a series I grew up with.

それから、六本木の美術館へ行きました。そこの有名な大きいクモを見ました。その時スターウォーズの出品物がありました。子供からずっと見てたシリーズを色々な人の解釈でもう一回見るのはとても面白かったです。

I also went to Harajuku and had some amazing Ramen. We also tried to go shopping, but as we thought it was extraordinarily expensive so we didn’t buy much. We then walked to Shinjuku and enjoyed restaurants and even saw Godzilla! We later went to the Gyoen (National Garden) in the daytime. We also visited Ikebukuro and I went to a cat cafe. It was only alright and I think the idea of a cat cafe is cooler than it in reality.

原宿も行って、とても素晴らしいラーメンを食べました。買い物に行こうと思っていたけど、やはり高すぎてあまり買いませんでした。原宿から新宿へ歩いて、レストランで食べて、遠くにゴジラ像が見えました。日中に新宿御苑に行きました。それから、池袋で猫カフェに行ってみました。私にとってちょっとまあまあでしたが、キャットカフェは多分現実よりも想像上の方がいいと思います。

Another day, we went to the Imperial Palace, but we couldn’t get to the castle to take any good pictures. I was a little disappointed about it. To cheer me up we headed to the Tokyo Dome. I rode a rollercoaster that was there and then we walked to TENQ a space museum. It was a lot of fun to see all the space related works. I even bought space food.

別の日に皇居に行ってみたけれど、遠くからしか見なかったから、いい写真を撮れませんでした。それにちょっと失望しました。元気を出す為に東京ドームに行きました。あそこの近くにあるジェットコースターに乗って、そしてテンキューという宇宙ミュージアムに行きました。宇宙に関係あるものをみるのはとても楽しかったんですよ。宇宙食も買いましたよ。

I spent a lot of time in Akihabara looking at video games from my childhood, especially Super Famicons. I liked that there were so many places to get cheap books and manga and bought a bit there. It was very cool to see the center of what a lot of people consider “cool Japan”. I later went to Shinjuku to see the scramble and Hachiko and spent the rest of my time clothes shopping at recycle stores there.

よく秋葉原で時間を過ごして子供ごろのゲームを見て、特にスーパーファミコンです。秋葉原に沢山の安い漫画と小説を売ってる店があり結構買いました。有名な「クールジャパン」の中心の所（秋葉原）を見るのは非常に面白かったです。後は、新宿のスクランブルとハチ公像をみて、ずっとリサイクル屋で服を買いました。

Finally, on one of our last nights in Tokyo my friends and I went to Ebisu. There we went to an Okinawan Izakaya and I finally got to try one food I was very curious about, Sea Grapes. Back in University for one of our many presentations in Japanese, we each had to choose an area of Japan and discuss its famous foods and sights etc. My one friend chose to do hers on Okinawa and mentioned Sea Grapes, I had never heard or seen something like that in Canada so I was very excited to try it. While we were flipping through the menu I was elated to see it there. I tried to explain it to my friends and they had a hard time imagining it. We ordered it and we all got to try a bit. It was better than I thought and everyone really enjoyed it. It was very delicate and it sort of popped in your mouth. It was delicious and I would definitely order it again.

一人の友達と最後の夜に恵比寿へ行きました。沖縄風の居酒屋に行って、そして私が前から興味を持っていた食べ物の一つをやっと食べて、その食べ物は海ぶどうでした。大学生時代、多くの日本語授業の発表の中で、国内旅行のテーマがあり、その場所の有名な食べ物や見物所などを話しました。一人の友達は沖縄について発表し、その発表で海ぶどうが出て、カナダではそういう食べ物を見たことが一度もないので、食べるのを楽しみにしていました。居酒屋のメニューを見るとこの海ぶどうが書いてあったので非常にうれしかったです。友達に説明しようとしたけど、皆あまり想像できませんでした。注文して皆が少しだけを試食すると、思ったより美味しかったので、皆が気に入りました。上品な味で口の中で柔らかくプチプチしていました。とても美味しかったので、もう一度注文したいと思います。

An April with Nice Weather 天気がいい四月

With the start of this month, spring break is over. The students in Embetsu are now adjusting to their new roles. It seems they all had an excellent spring break.

今月の始めに春休みはもう終わりました。遠別の生徒たちは彼らの新しい役目を果たすように頑張っています。皆さんはとても素敵な春休みを過ごしたそうです。

Recently, Embetsu has been having nice weather. I am happy for this early spring. I am also happy that I can now see the sunset after work. It is very beautiful. Even more than that, I am enjoying being able to ride my bike again. But the greatest feeling is saying goodbye to the snow.

最近、遠別の天気はとても良かったんですよね。 この早春はとても素晴らしいと思います。仕事後に日没を見えるようになったのを喜んでいます。非常にきれいですから。さらに自転車にも乗れるようになったので楽しんでいます。でも、最も素晴らしいことは今までの雪に「さよなら」を言ったことです。

I, unfortunately, have not been travelling as of late. The furthest I have gone is to Asahikawa and explored the new Aeon mall, or to Sapporo to hang out with friends. But I can’t wait for travelling since golden week is coming up.

残念なんですけど、最近あまり旅行をしていません。ただ旭川の新しいAeonモールに行くとか、札幌で友達と遊ぶことぐらいです。しかし、ゴールデンウイークに旅するのは楽しみにしています。

Now, I will introduce another interesting Japanese food. This time is something a little extravagant and expensive, horse sashimi.

今、もう一つの面白いと思う日本の食べ物を紹介します。今回は贅沢で高い馬刺しです。

The first time I ate horse sashimi was in Kyushu’s town of Yanagawa. This was an experience I had in high school, so I spent 3 days having various experiences while staying with a host family in Yanagawa. For example, I got to ride the famous Yanagawa Gondolas, and worked for a day at a Yanagawa Eel shop. After that day, my host mother made me a wonderful meal. My host mother was very good at cooking so Hokkaido crab and Eel were served, and then, out came the Horse sashimi. Back then I was pretty ignorant towards Japanese food, and seeing a red meat sashimi was a little off putting. More than that, in Canada we almost never eat horse meat, so soon as she said “This is horse meat”, I quickly tried to think of the most polite way to turn down the food. But when my host family said to me “But this is very expensive…”,  I knew that this was something they were doing so that someone from another country could have an amazing experience. Upon this realization, I knew that I had to eat it. A red meat sashimi -and specifically horse sahimi -was not as bad as I had thought, but the sauce was the best part I think. The thing I thought was the strangest was how it was very chewy. I wouldn’t say that I really liked it, but if it is there I would have no hesitation eating it again.

初めて馬刺しを食べたことは九州の柳川市です。その高校時代の経験なので、三日間でホストファミリーといろいろなことをしました。例えば、柳川市の有名なゴンドラに乗ったり、一日で柳川のうなぎ屋さんで勤めたりしました。その最後の日、ホストファミリーのお母さんはとても素晴らしい食事を作りました。ホストファミリーのお母さんは料理が得意なので北海道からのカニとかウナギもとかが出て、そして、馬刺しが出ました。その時、私は日本の食べ物に対して結構無知だったから、赤肉の刺身はちょっといやでした。それより、馬はカナダではあまり食べないので、彼女は「馬の肉です」と言ったとたんに、私が一番丁寧なお断りを考えました。でも、ホストファミリーが私に「とても高いんですけど」と言ったから、彼らが外国人にとても素晴らしい経験させるように頑張っていることが分かりました。と言う訳で、食べるしかなかったんです。赤肉の刺身と馬刺しは思ったよりまずくなかったけど、ソースは一番おいしかったと思います。一番変だと思ったところは、歯ごたえでした。とても好きだというまでではないけど、あれば食べると思います。

The End of March 四月の末

It is now almost the end of March. What an interesting month. So many farewells, and I am so happy I have been able to see so many important moments for my students. It has been so great seeing all of the students in Embetsu grow. Also, next month I am excited to see all the new students, and see the next steps in life. But I hope they have a good spring break and enjoy themselves.

もうすぐ三月の末ですね。とても面白い月でした。たくさんの別れがあったけれど、生徒たちにとっての大事な時を見るのは幸せです。遠別の子供たちの成長が本当にすばらしいと思います。それと、来月、新しい生徒に会うのと子供たちの次の一歩を見るのは楽しみです。でも、その日まで、皆が春休み、ゆっくり時間をすごし、楽しんでくれたらいいなと思っています。

I am also so happy because of the recent weather. I am so excited for an early spring. When I first heard I was going to Hokkaido I was so nervous about the “Hokkaido winter”. I think I was quite fortunate that this winter was mild (for Hokkaido). But even so it was not like most winters I have been through. It still surprises that Hokkaido is more south than Canada (Latitude wise), but none of the areas I have lived in Canada have been as cold and snowy as this winter has been.

もうひとつのうれしいことは最近の天気です。この早い春の訪れを楽しみをしています。最初北海道に行くと聞いた時、北海道の冬に対して恐れがありました。今年の冬がこんなに（北海道にとって）穏やかなのは幸運なのですね。それにしても、私が経験た冬とは違います。でもびっくりすることは、北海道はカナダの全土より南方（緯度的に）に位置しているけど、私が住んでいたカナダの冬は北海道の冬ほどじゃなかったです。

Since I been going to a bunch of graduations, I haven’t really done much travelling. But, I will tell you one of the most interesting foods I have eaten. This food is called shiokara. To be completely honest, even now I have no idea what I have eaten. Despite what it looked like, I decided that it was possible it could taste alright. You never know unless you try. Unfortunately, this was not the case for me. I really did not enjoy eating this. The taste and the texture was just too different to what I am used to. This is one Japanese food that I will probably not order again.

最近卒業式にいったので、旅行はあまりしていなかったです。しかし、ひとつ面白い食べたものを紹介したいと思います。今週は塩辛です。実は、今でもいったい何を食べたかどうか分かりません。塩辛の見かけよらず、味が美味しい可能性があるかもと思いました。残念だけれど、私にとってそうでもなかったです。好きじゃなかったです。塩辛の味と歯ごたえが私のカナダで食べたものと違い過ぎたのです。これはたぶん二度と注文しない和食です。

Graduations and I Finally Went Snowboarding卒業と久しぶりのスノーボード

On the first of this month, I was fortunate enough to go to Embetsu Agricultural High School’s graduation. That was my first time seeing a Japanese graduation ceremony. Just as I thought, it was a completely different atmosphere compared to my own graduations, with a lot more bows than I am used to. But, it was great seeing all the grade 12 students excited for the next part of their lives. Many seemed so sad to go, but I think it was a good send off. I wish them all the best in the future.

今月の一日、運が良くて遠別農業高校の卒業式へ行きました。日本の卒業式を見るの初めてでした。思った通り,自分の卒業式と違う雰囲気があり, 会釈が多かったです。しかし、全員の三年生の明るく将来に対する笑顔を見るのはとても良かったです。高校を出るので、皆が悲しそうに見えたけれど、とても素晴らしいお祝いでした。生徒たちが将来の幸せを見つけることを祈っています。

It seems like there will be a lot of graduations this month, and a lot of changes. Most of the images I have of this time from movies is that there is supposed to be cherry blossoms blooming all throughout this time of year. Yet, Hokkaido just seems to get snow instead. It is hard to see pictures of Vancouver, which already has the cherry blossoms in bloom.

今月はたくさんの卒業式があると思いますが、たくさんの変化もあります。今頃のイメージは（三月のイメージ）卒業式と桜が咲いていることです。しかし、北海道はその代わりにたくさんの雪があります。バンクーバーの友達からくる桜の写真を見るのはいやですけどね。

Oh well, the snow isn’t so bad. I mean last weekend I went to Niseko and went snowboarding. It was the first time I have gone since I was 13 years old. I was so surprised how expensive it was, but even more about how many people from other countries there was. All the Japanese people in town spoke extremely high levels of English, and even had different accents. Even the clerks at the Seico mart spoke English, I was so shocked. It didn’t feel like I was in Japan anymore. But the snowboarding was great, I didn’t injure myself, and I had a ton of fun going to all the different foreign food restaurants in Niseko.

まあ、雪はそんなに悪くないものですね。だって、先週の週末にニセコでスノーボードをしました。13歳時以来のはじめてのスノーボードをしました。驚いたことが二つ、値段の高さと、外国から来た人の数でした。それと、町で英語をペラペラ話せる日本人がいて、いろんな英語の方言が話せることも出来たのはびっくりしました。セイコ・マートの店員さんまでの英語がうまくて、本当に驚きました。全然日本のような気がしませんでした。でも、スノーボードが面白くて、怪我がなくて、ニセコのたくさんの外国料理が食べれる店に行くのはとても楽しかったです。

I ate a very interesting ramen in Niseko, the “Niseko Spicy Ramen”. I love Spicy food, and this Ramen looked like no Ramen I had seen before. I thought it looked weird, so of course I had to order it. The white foam was a potato cream. It was so tasty, it reminded me of mashed potatoes back home. It was also spicy with chilli oil, it had corn and bamboo in it, and was miso flavoured. I really liked it.

ニセコでとても面白いラーメンを食べて、「ニセコスパイシーラーメン」でした。辛いものが好きで、それとも、見たことないのラーメンを見ました。「変だな」と思ったので、注文をしなければなりませんでした。その上にある具は芋のクリームのようなものです。すごく美味しかったので、カナダのマッシュポテトを思い出しました。チリ・オイルをかけて辛くなって、そして具の下にコーンとしなちくと味噌味のラーメンでした。めっちゃ好きでした。

That has been my adventures this past week or so. March is a very busy time for everyone, with teachers moving, and the graduations.

これは今週の出来事です。三月では先生方が引っ越しと卒業式があり、誰にとっても忙しい時ですもんね。

Ice & Snow Festival and Weird Food. アイスとスノー・フェスティバルと変な食べ物

This past weekend, I went to Haboro’s Ice and Snow Festival. It was nice seeing some of my friends, as well as seeing all of the races in funny costumes. I also got to have a snow ball fight with some of the kids too. It was a lot of fun.

先週の週末羽幌のアイスとスノー・フェスティバルに行きました。面白い仮装を着てレースをしていた羽幌の人々を見るのを友達と楽しみました。小さい子供たちと雪合戦をするのはとても面白かったです。とても楽しい一日でした。

　

In Haboro I also ate their delicious octopus gyoza. One thing that is a constant in my life is my love of food. As a kid I wanted to become a famous TV chef. So, I spent a ton of time in the kitchen learning to cook. I tried to learn new recipes from my family members, and was taught recipes whenever my parents and I went to a dinner party from my parent’s friends. Anyways, since I was a kid I have always been adventurous with food.

羽幌の美味しいタコ餃子を食べました。私の人生では一つの食べ物に対する執着心は食べ物に対する愛です。子供の頃、テレビに出る有名なシェフになりたかったです。そのため、料理を上手に出来るように、台所で沢山の時間を過ごしました。家族から新しいレシピを学んで、晩御飯に両親の友達の所に行ってもその友達に新しいレシピ教えられました。つまり、小さい時からずっと何の食べ物でも試してみていました。

As you can imagine, since moving to Japan the food I eat has changed drastically. In fact, when I shop for food there is a 30% chance I have no idea what I am looking at. I can`t read the kanji, and even if I look up the food in a dictionary it is some obscure word I have never read before. Often this has lead me to take trips to foreign food stores in Asahikawa and Sapporo just to get some of the foods I am homesick for (Actually I just went to Costco in Sapporo for food this weekend). Despite me eating familiar foods often, I still take a risk and buy some sort of unknown food at the grocery store.

想像するように、日本に引っ越した後食べるものが非常に変わってしまいました。実際に、スーパーで買い物している時の30%は「一体なんの物、これ？」というものです。漢字が読めないことや辞書に調べても全く知らなくて、一度も見たことない言葉が出ることが多いです。この状態から、私をホームシックにさせる食べ物のためよく旭川や札幌の外国料理の店に行きます（実は先週に札幌のCostcoも行ったばかりです）。私が結構慣れている食べ物を食べても、またリスクを負ってスーパーのまったく知らない食べ物を買います。

I actually made it a bit of a goal of mine. I decided every week, I want to eat some unknown food, or my first thought is “that looks weird.” So here on this blog I thought it might be cool to introduce these “weird foods” to you.

実は、これがちょっと目標のようになっています。毎週、知らない食べ物を食べたり、最初の印象が「変だな」と思ってもの食べようとしています。このブログでこの「変な食べ物」を紹介しようのは面白いかもと思っています。

So here is the first “strange” food I ate here in Hokkaido, corn ice cream.

さて、北海道での初めて「変」な食べ物の紹介、コーン味アイスです。

I found this at Seico Mart when I first got here. I had never in my life ever imagined something like corn flavored ice cream. I like corn, but I soon found out that I probably don’t like corn THAT MUCH. Despite that I bought it. I cannot believe how corn flavored it was. Honestly it was too much corn for me to handle, but I didn’t give up and ate it all. But I did feel a little sick afterwards.

これはセイコ・マートで見つけたものです。今まで、一度もコーン味のアイスのような物を想像した事は絶対にありませんでした。コーンが好きなんだけれど、コーン味のアイスを食べたいほどではないだろうと思っていました。でも、思い切って買いました。信じられないほどコーンの味が強かったです。実際は、私にとって結構味が濃すぎて耐えられなかったような気したけど、諦めず、全てを食べました。でも、食べた後お腹が痛くなってしまいました。

6 Months, REALLY?!? 六ヶ月間、マジで？！？

I have spent the last hour trying to think of an appropriate way to start this blog. Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of is the most common phrase in the Japanese language, Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.

私が一時間ぐらいにこのブログの一番適切な始まり言葉を悩んでいました。残念なんですけれど、考えた事は一つしかなくて、日本語の最も普通な表現で、よろしくお願いします。

Actually, it seems difficult or rather strange to do an introduction, as I have already been in Embetsu for 6 months now. 6 months…I can’t believe it. The time has gone by so quickly. But, I will do an introduction anyways.

実は、私がもう六ヶ月間遠別町に住んでいるので、自己紹介をするのは、難しいと言うか変と言うかような気がします。六ヶ月間って信じられません。時間がものすごく速く過ごしてしまったそうですね。それはさておき、自己紹介をします。

My name is Nicholas Hoyte. I am a 22 year old Canadian, from a town called Vernon. I graduated university with a degree in Japanese Language in Culture, so I am still trying to improve my Japanese ability anyway I can. Something interesting about me is that I grew up surrounded by sparkles. Now, I realize that that probably sounds pretty strange. You might be thinking,”Hey Nick, what EXACTLY does that mean?” Well I don’t know how else to describe my experience with my mother being a belly dancer. It basically means that as I grew up with my older sister and older brother, no matter the place, there was always sparkling clothes around me. I also as a kid grew up listening to Arabic music,　went to many performances with my mom, met many people from other countries, and my mother’s love of dance lead my parents to taking ballroom classes together as well. Ultimately, this lead me to have some interesting and extremely embarrassing memories with my family. However,thanks to my mom’s interests, since the day I was born, I have always been exposed to other cultures, and then slowly this lead me to gain an interest in other cultures as well. In fact I think that that could be one of the reasons I have ended up here in Embetsu today.

私はホイト・ニコラス（ニック）と申します。２２歳バノンと言う町の出身カナダ人です。日本語と日本語の文化と言う専門で大学を卒業したので、また日本語能力を向上するために出来るだけ頑張っています。私の面白いところは、ピカピカに囲まれながら育たれました。さあ、私でも気づいたんですけど、それがちょっと変と聞こえるですよね。「ねぇニックさん、それはいったいどういう意味なのかよ」と思っているかもしれません。さあ、実は母が子供の時からずっとベリーダンサーの経験をもっとうまく伝えれる方法はそれしかないんです。基本的に、姉と兄と一緒に成長していた時、どこに行っても、ピカピカしている服が私の周りにあったという意味です。私も赤ちゃんの時からいつもアラビアの音楽を聴いたり、母とたくさんの発表会に行ったり、いろいろな国からの人と出会ったり、母のダンスに対する愛のおかげで今も父と一緒に社交ダンスをやっています。最終的に、たくさんの面白いこととものすごく恥ずかしい家族との思い出を持っています。しかし、母の興味のおかげで、生まれた日からずっと別の国の文化に接して、私もだんだん別の国の文化に興味を持つようになりました。実際に、それが一つの今日遠別にいる理由かもしれません。

So let’s continue, I want to give a quick summary of all the things I have done in my 6 months in Embetsu. Here is the big news of my time in Embetsu:

続いて、私の遠別で過ごした半年を紹介したいと思います。それでは、私の遠別大ニュースです。

• The Children’s festival. I got to meet my students for the first time and learn a new dance!　子ども祭りで、初めて生徒たちの顔を見ながら、新しいダンスを習いました。
• The Bon festival where I got to see everyone in funny costumes.　お盆祭りで、皆を面白い仮装を着るのを見ました。とても楽しかったんです
• I went to a Lantern festival in Numata and saw some amazing floats.　沼田の行灯祭りに行って、非常に立派な山車を見ました。
• I went to Sapporo and Ishikari to eat Ishikari’s tasty sake nabe （salmon hot pot).　札幌と石狩に行って、石狩のとても美味しい鮭鍋を食べました。
• Saw the town wide marathon. Everyone really did their best. I hope I can run next year too.　遠別のマラソン大会を見ました。皆が本当に頑張りましたよね。私も来年参加したいと思っています。
• Enjoyed Halloween at the Elementary school, and also helped out at the Halloween party in Higashikawa.　遠別小学校でハロウィンを楽しんで、そして東川でハロウィンパーティを手伝いました。
• Had an early Christmas with my friends in Higashikawa, and then closer to Christmas day I had Christmas dinner from a convenient store with my friends in Rumoi. It was much better than I thought.　東川で友達と早いクリスマスをして、そしてもっとクリスマス日の近くに留萌の友達とコンビニのクリスマス夕食を食べました。思ったより美味しかった。
• Saw the Embetsu Coming of Age Ceremony. They all seemed very adult.　遠別の成人式を見ました。全員がとても大人ぽっく見えました
• Went to Oita in Kyushu over winter break to visit with the host family I had in high school.　冬休みの時九州の大分県に高校時代に留学したホストファミリーと遊びました。
• Passed the Japanese Language Proficiency test level N2.　日本語能力試験二級に合格しました。
• And finally, spent this last weekend is Sapporo for the Snow festival. そして最後に、先週の週末に札幌の雪まつりを見に行きました。

It has been an amazing 6 months, and I cannot wait for the rest of the year. Especially once summer finally comes back.

とても素晴らしい半年で、今後も楽しみにしています。特に夏がまた戻ってくるので楽しみです。
